About Jefferson United Methodist Church

Planning for Jefferson United Methodist Church began with a meeting in 1843 in a log school building on the Gill farm in what is now Jefferson Hills Borough. The first church school founded in 1845 only was in session for six months of the year “due to inclement weather and impassable roads.”

In 1875 Elijah Beam donated land for the site of the original church building which was built by Mr. William Snee. This church was used for 80 years until the current “red brick church on the hill” was built by Paul and Noble Dick in 1923 and dedicated April 27, 1924.

“Feeling the need for expansion”, the church purchased additional land in 1955 and 1960. The parsonage was built on church property along Gill Hall Road in 1959 and the present social hall/education building constructed during June-December 1961, and dedicated February 18, 1962. Scarlett and Mitchell, Pittsburgh, was the architect for the Educational and Fellowship Building and Magner Construction Company, Inc., Curry Hollow Road, the building contractor. Renovation of this facility is one of the primary objectives of the Vision Committee.

Beginning April 8, 2002, the current church building underwent major renovation under the direction of architect J.A. Kudravy & Associates, with Dominion Construction Services, Inc. as the building contractor. The renovated church building with the addition of the steeple above the front entrance was consecrated on October 27, 2002.

Jefferson United Methodist Church embraces change and the future, as we enter a new era with Reverend Keith H. McIlwain becoming pastor in July 2006. However, Jefferson UMC also offers a church where we have longtime members and traditions. Our Sunday worship attendance averages over 100 for the services combined. That allows a worship and fellowship environment in which you can get to know the other members and feel a part of the church family.

As recently recognized in the July 2006 edition of Pittsburgh Magazine, new residential construction is occurring in the neighborhood of the church. Jefferson United Methodist Church, as pictured in the article, continues again to be a church building “to accommodate the expected surge in population”, just as it did 163 years ago.
